Leading UK Children’s Charity takes action to reduce exposure to volatile energy market
Action for Children formerly known as NCH, the children’s charity have appointed energy consultants PH Energy Services to provide a more strategic approach to the management of the charity’s energy spend.
Action for Children, works in partnership to run nearly 450 services for around 170,000 of the UK’s most vulnerable children, young people and their families. The charity was managing their energy procurement internally but with the market’s rising prices and extreme volatility the charity recognised that more expertise and a more strategic approach was required.
In October 2007 Action for Children appointed PH Energy Services as their energy consultant. Now PHES works closely with the charity’s procurement team and the finance department providing both procurement and utility invoice validation services.
James Sinclair, Action For Children’s Corporate Procurement Manager explains: “We were looking for real expertise and that’s what we found at PH Energy Services. The team have many years experience working in the energy sector and have many charities on their client base. We were impressed by their knowledge and the company’s ethos.
“Since working with PHES we have saved considerable sums of money by sensible and strategic procurement and the resolution of many historical issues that we had with energy suppliers. We received a rebate of over £15,000 within one month of appointing PHES.”
“We work very closely with the team at PHES who provide reliable information through the provision of financial reports that can be used for accruals and budgeting purposes. We can view our costs by site and look at year on year trends. This consolidation and accuracy of information is not something that we had access to before. As the charity comes under increasing pressure to limit its energy consumption these reports are vital to this process.”
Energy purchasing has become a minefield for procurement managers. Energy prices rose sharply from March to September of this year reaching record highs, since mid October these prices have come crashing down. James explains:
